The Department of Health and Social Care released new information about the changes to the death certification process in England and Wales which will come into effect from April 2024.
Medical examiners offering independent examination for deaths that are not subjected to investigation by a coroner is increasingly becoming a standard practice. With the new death certification reform coming into force, there will be an independent review of all deaths in England and Wales, provided by independent scrutiny by a medical examiner or by investigation by a coroner.
The reform of death certification will:
- provide additional scrutiny of the medical circumstances and cause of deaths
- ensure the right deaths are referred to coroners
