Cavell

Healthcare Conferences UK is delighted to announce that we have allocated Cavell as our chosen charity. Cavell is the charity supporting UK nursing and midwifery professionals when they are personally going through tough times, because they are the always there for all of us in our time of need.

“Being here for nursing and midwifery professionals is what Cavell does best, but we couldn’t do it without the generous support of our partners and fundraisers. We are honoured to be the chosen charity of Healthcare Conferences UK, who are giving back to the very workforce they deliver extensive and expert healthcare and social care conferences to. Together we can have a positive impact for the nursing and midwifery professions.”

Lewis Allett, Chief Executive, Cavell

Cavell makes a profound difference in the lives of nurses and midwives during their most challenging moments. As they navigate challenges in the workplace such as staffing shortages and burnout, many also face personal and financial hardship often due to illness, disability, domestic abuse and more. The work of the Cavell charity is a lifeline during these times, providing essential financial, emotional and holistic support.

Cavell’s support is tailored, so individuals receive the most effective and suitable help for them. In addition to one-off grants and rapid emergency funding for those at great risk, the charity’s support services include advice on maximising income and benefits, signposting and referrals to specialist services, and information to empower staff to manage their circumstances, which can be found on the Cavell Support Hub here.

Cavell’s support helps to keep this vital workforce strong. After ending up in accidental rent arrears, nurse Tris faced serious debt and considered giving up nursing altogether. After receiving Cavell’s help, she said: “As nurses we look after people all our lives and often, we feel there isn’t anyone to look after us when things go wrong. Even though it was difficult to reach out for help, the morale boost I’ve got from receiving Cavell’s support has been massive. It has stopped me from heading down a dark psychological hole.”

On assessing the reasons for giving grants in 2024, Cavell’s support team found that 42% of working age applicants were unable to meet basic needs like food. Cavell also surveyed nursing and midwifery staff in 2024 and 92% said that the stress and worry caused by their financial situation negatively impacts their mental health.

Cavell’s support has a huge impact on the financial and mental wellbeing of nursing and midwifery staff. Here are some positive outcomes for those that the charity supported in 2024:

  • 99% said that the support from Cavell helped to ease any financial hardship or crisis.
  • 81% said support from Cavell means they felt more in control of their circumstances.
  • 89% said they felt less stressed or anxious since receiving support from Cavell.
  • 82 % said support from Cavell positively affected their ability to do their job.
