Developing your skills as an Effective Nurse Consultant
Ms Alison Pottle
Cardiology Nurse Consultant, Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals, part of Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
Alison began her talk by explaining that "In the 80's and 90's career structure was limited. Experienced nurses were leaving the clinical role"
She continued to say " When I started as a Nurse Consultant in 2000 it was a steep learning curve as it was a new post and there were no guidelines to follow"
Alison said "I wanted to do things where I felt I could make a difference, I would think how can I put a nurse consultant spin on this?"
Alison concluded by saying "The sky is the limit you have to be bold, we need to retain staff and we need to prove the worth of the role".
Developing role of the Nurse Consultant in education, training and development
Ms Sandra Campbell
Macmillan Partnership Nurse Consultant for Palliative and End of Life Care, Scottish Ambulance Service NHS Trust
Sandra talked about influencing others, she said " We can influence but we have to work together. We need a whole system approach".
She continued "Influencing is one of the key elements of the role, we have to be able to influence"
Sandra also said "Don't be frightened to speak out, the nursing voice must be heard as sometimes we get drowned out by others" "You must always take the opportunity to share and learn".
