In this conference we will be learning from leading healthcare professionals from obstetrics, neonatology, midwifery and nursing to focus on best practice in avoiding the incidence of brain injuries in newborns during labour and delivery. The event will cover the latest advancements in evidence-based practices through expert-led sessions and interactive discussions.
“Any event of avoidable brain injury is devastating for the mother, for the families and for all the staff involved. Improving multidisciplinary training is key to improving pregnancy outcomes, equally sharing good practice, and learning from mistakes is crucial.”
Gill Walton, Chief Executive of the RCM, October 2024
“We welcome the opportunity to further enhance the skills of NHS staff so they can provide the best possible care for women and babies. The NHS is already making progress on reducing rates of brain injuries in childbirth and we look forward to continuing this work with royal colleges and other partners as part of our commitment to improving services.”
Donald Peebles, NHS national clinical director for maternity, October 2024
The conference will focus on the National ‘Avoiding Brain Injury in Childbirth (ABC)’ programme which is being piloted at several NHS Trusts. This programme will support staff to effectively interpret fetal monitoring data and optimise delivery practices with practical tools and actionable strategies that can be applied to clinical practice:
“This is a critical step toward avoiding preventable brain injuries in babies, as we work to make sure all women and babies receive safe, personalised and compassionate care. This Government is working with the NHS to urgently improve maternity care, giving staff the support they need to improve safety and ensure women’s voices are properly heard.”
Baroness Gillian Merron, Minister for Patient Safety, Women’s Health and Mental Health, October 2024
