There is an urgent need for the providing of better support and resources for mental health wards in hospitals across England. Over the past ten years, hospital admissions for acute mental health concerns among children and young people have overall increased by 65%, with most cases being related to self-harm and eating disorders. Most common admissions were related to self-harm with an estimated total of around 21,337 (53.4%), as well as admissions related to eating disorders, which saw a rise from 478 to 2938 (515%) amongst young girls.
Hospital wards are struggling to maintain the necessary support and facilities needed to help patients, with admissions for mental health related struggles spanning over a week (7.8%) compared to 12,044 (3.5%) of overall hospital admissions, as seen in a 2021-22 study.
