“I am keenly aware of the vital part that Caldicott Guardians play in ensuring people’s data is used responsibly to support the delivery of better care. Having more staff in the system to advise on the ethical and legal aspects of data sharing benefits us all.”

Dr Nicola Byrne, National Data Guardian for Health and Social Care

“We need to recognise how difficult the job of Caldicott Guardian can be, there are two particular reasons for that, one is the nature of the decisions themselves are often very tricky, so much depends on an ethical consideration weighing up case by case where you have the Caldicott principles, you have the law but deciding what to do in any one particular situation can be a very difficult decision and it’s not always obvious what the right thing to do could be. Everybody is doing this alongside busy jobs… It can be a tricky, pressured job that requires:

• Making difficult calls on the right/best course of action

• Finding time alongside clinical duties + ‘the day job’

You can really make a difference not only to patients but also to staff and getting it right for patients and staff can be enormously rewarding Yours is a crucial role in upholding confidentiality and public trust

Dr Nicola Byrne, National Data Guardian for Health and Social Care, May 2024

Healthcare Conferences UK in association with Christopher Fincken, Independent Member UK Caldicott Guardian Council, (Former Chairman) are pleased to announce the National Virtual Caldicott Guardian Leadership Summit 2024. Following the success of our previous Caldicott Guardian National Conferences, and feedback from our regular Caldicott Training Masterclasses, this conference will focus on developing your role as a Caldicott Guardian and developing your skills and competence in leading the Caldicott function across your organization. The conference which can be attended in person or virtually will support you to develop your Caldicott Leadership skills in practice.

“It is essential that the Caldicott guardian should be a person with the ability to apply the caldicott guardian principles wisely, and the ability and courage to speak openly with authority to the highest level of decision maker in the organisation. They should be able to act with compassion, integrity, objectivity, honesty and in the best interests of the organisation’s patients or service users, recognising that their advice will affect people. All Caldicott guardians need a strong commitment to the role. They need the inquisitiveness to question, analyse and challenge decision makers. They need to be able to apply wise judgement to the precise circumstances of each case. They need good interpersonal and communication skills.”
