Strategic Volunteer Engagement — steps to success

Thu, 1 May 2025

Virtual, Online

Mixing presentation and interactive discussions, this course will help you to understand and engage people as volunteers for your cause, movement or organisation. You’ll take your first steps to preparing or refreshing an effective volunteer engagement strategy.

“We’re not facing a volunteer shortage, it’s an engagement crisis.”

Volunteer Toronto (2024)

“People today are willing to volunteer, but on their terms, not ours, and we have to adapt accordingly.”

Rob Jackson

Despite the headlines, it is possible to recruit and retain volunteers in our post-pandemic world. But doing so requires a change in mindset and approach. Doing what we’ve always done won’t get us what we’ve always got anymore. The world has changed.

Led by internationally renowned volunteering expert, Rob Jackson, this course will help you understand the changes taking place in volunteering, why they are occurring, what you can do to adapt, and will start you on the path to developing an effective volunteer engagement strategy.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this masterclass, you will understand:

  • The current data on volunteer engagement — rates of volunteering, time given, why people volunteer and why they don’t

  • Some of the social trends driving change in volunteering

  • What organisations can do to adapt to the new volunteering reality

  • What steps you need to take to adapt your volunteering offer, learning from the experience of others on the course

  • How to set an effective vision for volunteer engagement and why that’s crucial to successful volunteering outcomes

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Anyone with an interest in understanding the contemporary context for volunteer engagement and wanting to start thinking about developing or refreshing an effective volunteering strategy.
