People working in hospices, care homes, hospitals, and other care settings often face the deaths of patients and residents. Each loss can be challenging, leading to what is known as 'professional grief.' Professional grief, if not properly supported and processed, can result in burnout and compassion fatigue impacting patient care, employee wellbeing and retention.
According to the 2024 Burnout Report by Mental Health UK, 9 in 10 UK adults experienced burnout in the past year, with those exposed to traumatic events in caregiving roles being at higher risk.
