Hip Fracture Summit 2025: Improving Care, Outcomes & Patient Experience

News and updates from today's conference focusing on improving care for hip fracture patients – learning from the September 2024 NHFD findings, and improving progress against the Key Performance Indicators and NICE quality standard for hip fracture.

Hip Fracture Care: Patient management in the early phases of care following hip fracture

• how do we ensure safety for the frail elderly in our hospitals

• minimising delays to theatre due to medical complications

Bob said "Our job is to save life or respect it's approaching end"

He continued "Its so important to get the person to the right team", "Our figures show over 90% of patients are sent to the wrong ward to start with!"

Bob also said "Get the patients in the right environment, home is where patients do better"

• ensuring the sicker, older, frailer patients are at the top of the surgical list

• how we have reduced delays in surgical operations as a result of avoidable inefficiencies in preoperative planning or in the organisation of theatre lists

  • using audit data to monitor care and prompt change

• using RCA to investigate and understand causes of breaches

• teamwork and implementation; respond quickly to problems as they arise

• quality improvement and evaluating the impact of service change

Will said "There is no doubt that the early mobilisation of a patient helps recovery", "We need people out of bed, we need to empower nurses to mobilise patients"

Will also said "Making sure the patient is seen by the right person early is key" and "You should meet your hip fracture leads every 2 weeks for job planning time, if you do, mortality will drop".

Will also said "Listen to the patient in front of you".
