The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recently launched a public consultation on updated guidelines for assessing and preventing falls among older people. The draft guidelines integrate the latest research and recommendations to support healthcare professionals in identifying individuals at risk of falls and implementing effective prevention strategies.
“Falls present a major, growing public health problem which can have devastating consequences for older people, their families, and the healthcare service…Fewer people suffering falls will result in a drop in the number of hospital visits and the need for ongoing treatments which will reduce pressure on the NHS. ”
The proposed updates cover several key areas. These include enhancing screening and assessment protocols for fall risk, managing contributing factors through evidence-based interventions, and ensuring that preventative measures are supported across various healthcare and community services. The guidelines aim to support the early identification of risk factors, offering practical recommendations on risk management to reduce the likelihood of falls and associated injuries in older adults.
In light of this, we’re hosting a series of conferences to explore the updated guidelines in detail and discuss practical strategies for implementation.
