News and updates from today's Day Case Total Hip Replacement - BADS conference

The conference focused on optimising day case surgery pathways, with discussions on patient selection, pre-assessment, post-surgery care, and the importance of clear separation between ambulatory and inpatient care. The speakers also shared their experiences with implementing ambulatory orthopaedic pathways, including the use of electronic records, pain management strategies, and the importance of early patient mobilisation. Challenges and successes in implementing day case surgery and enhanced recovery programs were also discussed, emphasizing the need for collaboration, patient involvement, and a team approach in patient care.

  • Mary discussed optimising the day case pathway. She emphasised the importance of setting up an exemplary day surgery pathway, managing patients' expectations, and preparing them for day surgery. Mary also stressed the importance of a well-planned day surgery pathway, including pre-assessment, day surgery unit facilities, and post-surgery care. She highlighted the need for clear separation of ambulatory from inpatient care, the role of the booking team in the day surgery process, and the need for protocols for pain, nausea, and vomiting.

  • Hiren, discussed the evolution of hip replacement surgery at Writington Hospital, emphasising teamwork and the benefits of day case hip replacements. 
  • Hiren was joined by a recent hip replacement patient, Sarah, who provided her experiences with the program.
  • Sarah shared her positive experiences with surgeries, particularly her preference for day case procedures to avoid hospital stays. She discussed her preoperative and postoperative processes, praising the efficiency of the surgical team and the pain control measures. Sarah also shared her experience of preparing for her hip surgery, emphasising the importance of mental preparation and support from her physiotherapist.
