News and updates from today's conference focusing on managing and supporting doctors in difficulty. This conference aims to support you to identify concerns early, diagnose the issues, and ensure effective intervention and support doctors who are experiencing difficulty or demonstrating difficult behaviours.

 

Managing and Supporting Doctors in Difficulty

Steve opened the day by talking about Managing and Supporting Doctors in Difficulty. 

Steve said 'We are all human, healthcare professionals are prone to error',  'When things do go wrong we need a culture in which we respect what has happened and we want need to learn from it'

On Organisational Culture, Steve said 'This is how we do things at our organisations',' It represents the collective values and belief of the people that work for those organisations'

Steve concluded by saying a doctor in difficulty is a Doctor who has caused concern to colleagues about their ability to carry out duties. We have all probably been a doctor in difficulty at some point and its important to remember there is a person at the centre of any problem or complaint who needs supporting'.

 

Psychological Safety & Managing the Psychological After-Effects of The Pandemic

• the fundamentals of psychological safety
• a stepped care approach supporting emotional wellbeing
• the value of promoting team wellbeing rather than just individual resilience
• developing compassionate leadership

Perbinder spoke about Psychological Safety, he said 'Why are people scared of making mistakes? 'We have lives in our hands, but so do pilots  - but they also have their own lives in their hands'.

He continued by saying 'What makes a patient safe in hospital? - Staff engagement! It is all that's required to improve patient safety and improvements' 'This makes staff happy which goes on to make patients happy and it also means the staff will not leave'

Perbinder also said 'You need to engage a staff member and give them 5 elements for praise for every critisism' 'You need to have compassion, 'when people are overloaded and overwhelmed they are less able to be compassionate'

Perbinder concluded by saying - 'Motivation - it drives people, if you want to give someone motivation, you must give them value'.
