A Joint British Association of Day Surgery & HCUK Virtual Conference
As we enter the recovery phase following the huge disruption caused by Covid-19 the number of patients waiting for elective surgery remains at record levels, the highest it has ever been in the history of the NHS. In response to the Government Elective Recovery Plan, it is clear we must work differently to respond to these unprecedented waits. Increasing the delivery of day case surgery is an important component towards achieving this.
Day surgery and the elective recovery programme
Mr Mark Lansdown
Consultant Endocrine Surgeon
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
• The national picture around day case endocrine and disease progression
Mark starts his talk by discussing the waiting list minimum dataset. This has been collected since mid 2020 and “therefore does not go back to pre-pandemic performance and baseline widespread 18 weeks compliance.”
Mark advised that currently on the national database patient priority isn’t recorded.
The burden of this waiting list on the NHS is huge, and the data reveals that “the longer you are on the waiting list the more likely you will need an emergency admission”
The role of the day surgery teams
