This masterclass will enable participants from multiple sectors and agencies to recognise that the issues they see in people’s lives, whether health, education, social or criminal justice related, are often rooted in the same Adverse Childhood Experiences -forms of maltreatment, and the associated household and community stressors e.g. parental mental health, substance abuse, and violence in the family and community. Living with ACEs and the associated toxic traumatic stress responses can have life-long impacts on mental and physical health and parenting affecting the next generation.
By attending you will review the way trauma informed practice has been introduced across services, providing up to date information about the of the nature of adversity ACEs and trauma; and the rapidly growing field of PACEs – Positive and Compensatory experiences, which buffer traumatic responses, and their translation into therapeutic interventions.
Review the pathways which lead individuals to present to health, education, social or criminal justice services, and the way services nationally and internationally have introduced trauma-informed practice at universal, targeted and specialist levels to break the cycle of adversity and training approaches to help services achieve this goal.

Arnon Bentovim was Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and the Tavistock Clinic. He took responsibility for the management of child protection at the Hospital and established the Child Sexual Abuse Assessment and Treatment Service, the first comprehensive service in the UK. Child & Family Training, C&FT- promotes multidisciplinary training of evidence -based approaches to assessment, analysis and intervention including the development of the UK Hope for Children and Family (HfCF) modular intervention resources. C&FT received the Lionel Hersov ACAMH team award in 2023, demonstrating the use of evidence based approaches into clinical practice.
Jenny Gray OBE is a Social Work Consultant and was President of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (2012-14). From 1995 – 2012 she was professional advisor to the Government on safeguarding children, led policy development on the assessment of children in need, serious case and child death reviews, and commissioned children’s services research. She co-edited the Hope for Children and Families Intervention Resources. She has delivered training extensively both in the UK and abroad.
