EPMA - Integration and use of real time data for improvement

Sam Coffey Lead Pharmacist EPMA, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust

• development and deployment of EPMA
• towards maturity: our experience
• integration and use of real time data for improvement and work prioritisation
• clinician feedback and the impact on error rates

Sam shared his experience of rolling out EPMA and how they have tried to optimise the system for their patients and staff, which has improved governance and safety around medications.  He said things they have considered include access - an electronic system needs to be as quick as pen and paper, and sufficient hardware and stable WiFi is really important.  Sam shared outstanding issues including agency staff, transcribing between systems and no reduction in printing. For the future they would like to see more pathology on their systems so they can see if they are doing their best for their patients. They are also working on primary care integration and pre-admission prescribing.
